Drones Registration FAA – What it is and How to do it

Finally, you have bought the drone, but it’s not time to fly. The first step is to register your drone with the FAA. Registering your drone is mandatory; if you drive your drone without registration then the penalty could be harsh. The fine may reach up to $27,500 and can also be handed a three-month jail term.

Process of registering your drone:

DRONES REGISTRATION FAA – A TO Z ON DRONES REGISTRATION PROCESS

  1. If your drone weighs about 0.55 pounds or less than that, then it doesn’t need any registration but can be flown under the exception of recreational flyers
  2. Drones registered under 107 may be flown under the recreational purposes and also under the part 107
  3. Drones registered under the exception of recreational purposes cannot be flown under the part 107

Requirements for registration:

  • For flying the drone, your age should be 13 or above. But if you are less than 13, then someone either your parent or elder can register for you
  • You should be a U.S. citizen or should be a legal permanent resident
  • If not a citizen of the U.S. then they should be lawfully organized under the law of the United States until the aircraft is based and used in the U.S.

Registration process:

  1. To register your drone you need to have email address, physical and mailing address, and the model of your drone
  2. If you are registering for “Part 107” then it costs about $5 per drone and it is valid for three years
  3. If you are registering for “Exception of Recreational Flyers” then it costs about $5 and valid for three years. The same registration number can be used for all the drones. If you need to change the registration from Part 107 to Exception of Recreational Flyers then you need to pay an addition of $5

Registration can be done in three steps:

Paper form:

If you need to fill the application in the paper form then you can get it from FAA Aircraft Registration Branch or any Flight Standard District Office

Online process:

  • You can fill the online form by visiting the AIRCRAFT REGISTRATION APPLICATION website. The registration form contains information includes name, signature, eligibility, title, and address
  • An affidavit will be displayed that establish the description of the UA which are as follows:
  1. The full legal name of UA manufacturer
  2. UA model designation
  3. UA serial number
  4. Class
  5. UA maximum take-off weight
  6. Number of engines
  7. Engine weight

This affidavit is mandatory as it establishes the ownership of UA by the applicant. Based on the UA, the form will take to the next step.

If the UA is not registered in another country, then it is considered as an import.

If the UA has not been registered anywhere but you have purchased it from the vendor or manufacturer or retailer, then you should include a statement letter that mentions, “I purchased this UA as a new off-the-shelf item from the (manufacturer or vendor or retailer name), (location), and (date).

If the UA has been registered in another country, then the statement should be included from the Civil Aviation Authority of the exporting country. This will confirm that either the UA has completed the registration or still it is not registered.

  • The final step is the confirmation that shows above the signature, “I affirm the information and statements provided herein are correct”. Before submitting, make sure the entered details are correct as it would difficult to change after the confirmation

There will be a particular amount of registration fee that you need to pay after clicking the submission button.

Mail Process:

  • You can also send a mail to the FAA Aircraft Registration Branch. For this, you need to send your necessary documents too
  1. The FAA will give a unique 10 digit registration number which is called N-number. The N-number should be displayed in the outer surface of the drone
  2. After the registration process is completed, you will receive an FAA registration certificate. You should carry this certificate in the form of either photocopy or digital copy when you fly the drone
